"How do you bridge the gap between business owner operator and effective team leader?"
This was a question I was asked a few days ago. And I love this questions because it addresses an often overlooked presence of a gap. And there is, quite often, a sneaky little gap.
You see not all great business owners are strong team leaders. And not all great leaders excel at operating a business.
Case Study: ME!
While I have an entrepreneurial spirit, I’m not necessarily great at business operations. I’ve had to work hard to acquire the discipline and skills necessary to feel successful. And I still work with a business coach. I have a strong vision and big ideas but execution and consistency in business don’t come naturally to me. (I am, after all a rebel at heart. Maybe you are too. 😉)
Leadership, however has always come naturally to me. In fact I was the first ever sophomore varsity dance captain at my high school. I even taught zero period dance my senior year to underclassmen (which was probably illegal actually but the dance teacher abandoned the program and administration didn’t seem to care but anyway ... you get the picture).
I’ve learned through personal experience and from working with fitness business owners internationally for the past 10 years that one of the best ways to bridge this gap is to write and use what I call The Playbook - systems for team recruitment, onboarding, training and development. For a boutique studio, if you don’t have a strong team, you don’t have a strong business.
The Playbook acts as a guiding force for your business. It provides direction, establishes expectations, outlines the steps to deliver your service with excellence, and clearly lays out the markers for success as well as what happens when marks are missed and how to adjust.
It’s a “this is how we do things here” field guide and frankly, best friend.
The Playbook not only acts as the foundation from which to build a successful (and less stressful) business but it supports your role as a team leader and most importantly paves the way to effectively delegate the many, many, many roles and responsibilities of being a small business owner. Which also means there’s a greater likelihood of scalability and growth.
Pretty cool.
I’ve built hundreds over the years. We’ve even got one ourselves and we don’t even have a team yet. But we built The FitCarMa Playbook knowing that we’d want a team someday.
That's Why On Thursday July 18th I’ll be guest hosting a webinar with Fliip
FLiiP's mission is to simplify the day-to-day management of owners in addition to being a growth partner of choice.
Created by owners, for owners, FLiiP understands the challenges and opportunities they face in running studios and training centers with features like:
Simple and automated booking management
A much more efficient management of subscriptions and their finances
Maximization of customer acquisition, retention and engagement
I’m excited to partner with Fliip for this webinar specifically because of their retention metrics. We’ll be talking about how to use metrics and customer reviews to pinpoint gaps in client experience and what you can do to tweak, fix or elevate your class offerings.
Hope to see you there!
