Episode 29: 5 Things Fitness & Yoga Teachers Must Do to Maximize Their Impact with Kimberly Spreen-Glick

In this episode, we talk about making an IMPACT – one of the words that shape my work in the fitness industry. If we’re passionate about changing people’s lives, making an impact through our classes is how we get started. Teaching a fitness class goes beyond the physical actions and gives people an opportunity to look at their internal processes when they experience fear, vulnerability, self doubt, etc. If they are able to push past these challenges in our class, they will be able to relate these reactions to their every day life obstacles as well. My guest today, Kimberly Spreen-Glick, does a great job of breaking down how we can begin to implement techniques to create an impactful experience in this episode. She has over 25-years of experience as a fitness and yoga teacher, trainer, coach, program developer and director. Kimberly has presented workshops on fitness, yoga, and personal development at conferences all over the world. She also worked as the Senior Director of Group fitness, Yoga and Indoor Cycling at LifeTime Fitness for over 10 years. Kimberly has since stepped away from the corporate world to begin her own project, the Make a Difference Academy.

1. The importance of staying connected with your “why.” Why do you teach in the first place? Ask yourself this question often. The fact is, you don’t have to, so what has you coming back? Kimberly uses this question as part of her pre-class presence practice. This takes less than two minutes, and begins in a quiet space, eyes closed, and three deep breaths. From here, ask yourself your “why” question and let your authentic answers flow. Then say “I don’t have to teach, I get to teach,” three times out loud. This helps you be present and grateful for the opportunity ahead.

2. Be authentic. You are a leader, and for you to be courageous enough to be yourself is very powerful. This gives your students permission to do the same. Instructors often do this when they see something from another trainer that they liked, take it, but don’t adjust it to their own personality, and people see through this very easily. What is most important in obtaining this authenticity is not creating something, but actually just something that already exists and  needs to be unveiled. You simply must let go of whatever it is that is stopping the real you from being seen, which is most often self doubt and fear of judgment.

3. Have a presence practice. Before the day even hits you, take a moment to reflect on what you are grateful for. It can be as simple as “I have a comfy bed, I have a roof over my head, etc.” and this has an impact on how you approach your day. The longer you practice this, the stronger of an effect it will have on your day and the easier you will be able to find your way back if you start to stray from your practice. Then, before you go to sleep, make sure to bring a positive mindset with you in your rest time. Close your eyes, take some deep breaths, and take a moment to again think about what you’re thankful for.

4. Prioritize self-care. The presence practice is a great foundation for this. If you are going to be in a role of service, you first have to take care of yourself. Find what it takes to get you into the zone, figure out what fuels your soul and get yourself there. It is important to fill your cup first, that way when you have more energy to give you are doing so to be of service and not for their gratitude. Make it part of your routine rather than only allowing yourselves these moments as a reward.

5. Always be in the mindset of learning and growth. You don’t stop with being foundationally trained and certified. You should continue to look for and take advantage of new opportunities that allow you to be better at what you do. No matter how long you’ve been doing something, you can always be better. Consider yourself first and foremost a student. Even if you have been training for 25 years, you can learn from a newbie and vice versa. Take everyone’s class you can get your hands on, attend conferences and workshops, listen to podcasts, take an online course, etc. There are endless opportunities nowadays. Look to have a mentor that is doing what you want to do, has similar values that you can look up to, and stay connected to them.
